Istria marks the arrival of spring and the rebirth of nature with young Malvazija wines by Vina Laguna

Yesterday evening a viewpoint nestled in the beautiful scenery of Agrolaguna Vineyards in Poreč provided a perfect stage for the presentation of young 2012 Vina Laguna Malvazija wines and the celebration of the first Istrian Malvazija May Day. The celebration started a new chapter in the story entitled “The lightness of being in Istria”, which is rooted in ancient culture and cherished traditions.

Over a hundred guests were welcomed in Funtana Vineyard by their Agrolaguna hosts and their special guest Mr. Oz Clarke, a multiple award-winning British wine author and one of the world’s leading wine connoisseurs.

May Day is a spring festival celebrated throughout the Western world on May 1st. Some of the earliest evidence shows people celebrating May Day as far back as prehistoric times. On this day the ancient Romans celebrated Flora, commemorating their goddess of flowers and fertility, while the Celts and our Illyrian ancestors who lived in Istria held festivities called Beltane.

Malvazija May Day will revive this ancient tradition and become an annual festival in Istria dedicated to the celebration of spring, the lightness of being in Istria, and the beginning of the holiday season. On this day guests and their Istrian hosts will enjoy young and fresh Vina Laguna wines, which are perfectly suited for lovely spring days and mild evenings, celebrating the awakening of nature and the fertility of Istrian soil.

While featuring traditional Istrian foods, dances and music, Vina Laguna took the opportunity at this May Day celebration to present two young Malvazija wines: 2012 Vina Laguna Malvazija 0.75 and 2012 Vina Laguna Festigia Malvazija 0.75 (premium).

The Malvazija grape rules the Istrian wine realm. Malvazija by Vina Laguna exudes the lightness of Istrian spring with wonderful freshness and pronounced notes of meadow flowers, balanced fruitiness, and lovely mineral notes characteristic of Istrian terroir. This refreshing and delicious combination of flavours makes Malvazija Vina Laguna the ideal Istrian table wine.

Agrolaguna’s Vina Laguna series offers consumers fine wines produced from the malvazija, merlot, cabernet sauvignon, and syrah varieties. In addition to premium wines, Agrolaguna also produces widely popular and appreciated olive oil and cheese made from sheep and cow’s milk. When Agrokor became the majority stakeholder in Agrolaguna the production processes were improved significantly. To this day over 230 million Croatian Kuna have been invested in production and this year alone the company will invest 4.5 million Croatian Kuna towards the expansion of its product range and future development.

Over the past four years Agrolaguna Vineyards has been putting tireless effort into producing the best quality Malvazija wine, while also sharing the story of Istria’s mild climate and the beauty exuded by the serene natural landscape of the region. In cooperation with top wine experts a tremendous quality has been achieved and wonderful wines have been produced from this Istrian grape variety, placing Vina Laguna among the world’s best. This quality has been proven by multiple awards and accolades won by Vina Laguna in a short time period at both national and international competitions. The vintners are especially proud of the bronze medal awarded to Vina Laguna Malvazija at the International Wine Challenge 2012 in London, gold medals won by Vina Laguna Festigia Malvazija at Citadelles du vin 2012 in France and at the Finger Lakes Wine Competition 2012 in the United States, as well as the bronze medal received from Decanter magazine in 2012.
